Race Part 3

In this particular video, we are talking about what YOU can do right where you are.

How you can enter the conversation in a positive way and make a thoughtful impact moving forward. We admire your bravery coming this far and engaging in a conversation many people would rather dodge. It is our hope that you will continue to have challenging conversations as you grow up and have new life experiences.

YOU can make a difference.

Think About:

  • What are some unique characteristics that you think define you? Are you a dancer? Are you part of a religion or faith? Are you part of a team? Are you part of a family? How would you feel if these unique characteristics were threatened or stereotyped on a day-to-day basis? How would that change you?
  • How comfortable are you talking about the topics of race and racism? Why do you think that is?
  • How do you personally define racism? Where do you think this definition comes from?
  • Do you believe that racism is still a problem today? Why or why not?
  • What are some examples of racism that you see today?

Activities:

  • Find an organization. Find an organization in your area dealing with issues of race in your community and volunteer your time.
  • Make a PSA. Film your own PSA to share on your social media accounts sharing what you've learned. It takes bravery to put it out into the world, but it can be powerful and is necessary. People are interested in what you've learned and what you have to say. Share it!
  • Support people of color. Read their books. Watch their videos. Listen to their thoughts. Go to their businesses. Find ways to support people of color to understand their points of view and to support them in tangible ways.
  • Add diversity to social media. On your own Instagram feeds and Snapchat stories, add some diversity. Follow people of color. Share their ideas with your social circle. Post pictures of people from diverse backgrounds. Branch out and try it!
